What's the point of self-monitoring of blood glucose?

Self-monitoring of blood glucose is considered a key element in the treatment of diabetes for:

Evaluation

of Blood Glucose Levels

Adjusting

insulin doses according to results.

Detection

of hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia

What are the complications of diabetes?

Diabetes, if not properly managed, can lead to a series of serious complications affecting various organs and systems in the body. Therefore, understanding these complications is crucial to their prevention and management.

Why do we need to monitor blood glucose levels?

The importance of blood glucose self-monitoring

Self-monitoring of blood glucose means measuring your own blood glucose at a given time of day. It is most often performed
: using a drop of blood taken from the tip of a finger using a lancing device;
Self-monitoring of blood glucose levels can be carried out at home, at the workplace, while traveling, or in a sports facility.

Frequency and purpose of blood glucose self-monitoring

Effective diabetes management relies on regular and accurate self-monitoring of blood glucose. Understanding the optimal frequency and objectives of this monitoring is essential to maintaining balanced blood glucose levels and preventing long-term complications.

  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Gestational Diabetes
  • Type 1 diabetes

    Self-monitoring of blood glucose frequency

    • At least four (4) times a day

It is known as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). It tends to appear in young people, but can occur throughout life. due to the progressive destruction of the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas by an autoimmune mechanism. This destruction leads to poor utilization of glucose by the cells and its accumulation in the blood.

    Glycemic Objectives:
    Min Value Max Value
    Before meals 70 mg/l 120 mg/l
    2h After Meals 160 mg/l
  • Type 2 diabetes

    Self-monitoring of blood glucose frequency

    • Ongoing insulin therapy --> At least four (4) times a day
    • Planned Insulin Therapy -- Two (02) to Four (4) Times a Day
    • Under Insulinecretors -- Two (2) Times a Week to Two (2) Times a Day

Non-insulin-dependent diabetes (NIDDM). It can become insulin-requiring, when oral antidiabetics are no longer sufficient. It tends to appear in adults over the age of 40. It is a progressive disease. Characterized by :
    - Insulin resistance: reduced effectiveness of insulin in target tissues, with increased hepatic glucose production and reduced muscle glycolysis.
    - Insulinopenia: insufficient insulin secretion, relative then absolute.

    Glycemic Objectives:
    Min Value Max Value
    Before meals 70 mg/l 120 mg/l
    2h After Meals 180 mg/l
  • Gestational Diabetes

    Self-monitoring of blood glucose frequency

    • At least four (4) times a day

Gestational diabetes, also known as “pregnancy diabetes”, is a carbohydrate tolerance disorder that occurs during pregnancy and disappears (not always) after delivery. It may also be indicative of previous diabetes.
*Risk factors: Late pregnancy, obesity or overweight, history of gestational diabetes, family history of diabetes, history of fetal macrosomia.
The screening test for gestational diabetes consists of measuring fasting blood glucose levels during the 1st trimester and/or measuring blood glucose levels during orally induced hyperglycemia between the 24th and 28th week of amenorrhea.

    Glycemic Objectives:
    Min Value Max Value
    Fasting 95 mg/l
    2h After Meals 120 mg/l
